Beagle Channel Boat Trips: Lighthouse, Sea Lions or Penguins?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors, the classic route of 3 hours is enough. The Beagle Channel catamaran cruise past sea lions starts at €59.58 and has 591 reviews. It covers the scenery people associate with Ushuaia without turning the outing into a full day.
The classic route
Boats leave Ushuaia’s port for the Bridges archipelago, bird colonies, sea lions and Les Eclaireurs lighthouse. Despite its nickname, Les Eclaireurs is not the Jules Verne “Lighthouse at the End of the World”; that historic association belongs to San Juan de Salvamento on Isla de los Estados.
The classic cruise also lists a short hike on Karelo Island. The yacht trip with minitrekking lasts 4 hours, starts at €89.87 and has 179 reviews. Choose it for the walk on the Bridges Islands, not because the main landmarks are different.
When penguins change the plan
Martillo Island is much farther east. The Beagle Channel and Penguin Island wildlife cruise takes 5 hours and starts at €116.83. It makes sense from roughly October to April, when penguins are present. Most cruises observe them from the boat; a landing requires a specifically authorised format.
If penguins are not your priority, the extra distance can mean more engine time and less flexibility. If they are your priority, a lighthouse-only cruise will feel incomplete even though it is cheaper.
Weather, seating and timing
The Beagle Channel can be cold and windy in every season. Large catamarans have indoor seating; decks still provide the clearest view. Sit near the middle if motion worries you and ask a pharmacist or doctor about seasickness before the trip rather than taking advice from a travel article.
Captains may alter the route for safety. Compare durations and current availability on the Beagle Channel cruises page.
