King Crab in Puerto Almanza: Is the Journey Worth It?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Puerto Almanza is worth the journey if the fishing village and the road along the Beagle Channel matter as much as the meal. It is about 75 km from Ushuaia, so this is not a quick restaurant detour. Go for a slow day of coastal scenery, local seafood and a small settlement; stay in Ushuaia if you only want to taste king crab.
What a guided route changes
The Almanza king crab route and penguin-watching trip combines the village with transport and other stops. Read the selected option carefully: a title that mentions crab and penguins does not prove that every meal, drink or wildlife segment is included. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and restaurant arrangements can vary by departure.
A tour removes the long-drive logistics and lets everyone look at the landscape. An independent trip gives you more control over lunch time and stops, but only if road conditions and the rental contract allow the route. If that is your plan, compare rental cars in Ushuaia, then confirm fuel policy, excess, CDW and any road restrictions with the operator.
Reserve the table, not just the car
Puerto Almanza has several small dining rooms rather than an endless row of restaurants. Opening days, seasonal closures and reservation rules differ. Contact the chosen restaurant shortly before travelling and ask what is available that day, how the crab is served and which payment methods are accepted. Do not assume the whole crab, a fixed menu or a particular price from a photograph.
This outing works best when you leave room for the journey. For more road-based options, compare our Ushuaia experiences.
