Ushuaia in Winter: Cerro Castor or Dog Sledding?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Cerro Castor and a dog-sled outing solve different holiday questions. Choose Cerro Castor when you want a full ski or snowboard day. Choose a winter centre in the Tierra Mayor valley when the experience is the snow itself: a short sled ride, snowshoes, cross-country skiing, a snowmobile segment or lunch in the valley.
Cerro Castor is the ski choice
The ski area lies about 26 km from Ushuaia and has pistes for different levels, equipment hire, lessons, food and childcare. Those services make it the straightforward option for beginners as well as committed skiers, but none should be assumed from a generic transfer. Check the operating calendar, lift pass, lesson and equipment separately with Cerro Castor before paying.
If nobody in your group wants to ski for several hours, a lift day can be poor value. A valley programme usually suits mixed groups better because activities are shorter and can be combined.
“Huskies included” may not mean a sled ride
Winter centres along Route 3 sell different packages. Some include a dog-sled ride with a musher; others offer a kennel visit or a mushing explanation without passengers riding behind the dogs. Snowmobile, UTV, snowshoe, meal and transfer inclusions also vary. Read the exact option and ask how much time belongs to each activity.
Snow conditions and weather affect every programme. Treat photographs as an illustration, not a promise of fresh powder. Wear warm layers and waterproof footwear, and confirm suitable clothing, minimum ages and accessibility directly with the operator rather than inferring them.
For mixed sightseeing beyond snow sports, browse our Ushuaia experiences. The best winter day is the one built around what your group actually wants to do, not the package with the longest list of nouns.
