Martial Glacier: Chairlift or Hike from Ushuaia?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Do not plan the Martial as a chairlift ride. The old lift is not the way up; today the useful starting point is the base area about 7 km from central Ushuaia, followed by a marked walk. The glacier itself is now a remnant high in the cirque. The reward is the changing view over the city and Beagle Channel rather than walking on ice.
Four walks, not one summit trail
The official reserve lists several routes. The Forest Circuit is the gentle introduction: about 30 minutes and 100 m of ascent. The Glacier Viewpoint Circuit takes about 75 minutes with 220 m of ascent. The Lagoon Viewpoint and Cloud circuits each take around 150 minutes, but the latter climbs 520 m. The Winds Circuit is currently closed, so a line on an old map is not permission to use it.
Choose by daylight, weather and footing, not merely by distance. Above the forest, wind and exposed ground make the route feel different from a city walk. In winter, snow and short days change the judgement completely. Start with enough light to return, stay on the authorised trail and turn around when visibility deteriorates.
Independent visit or guided stop?
An independent visit suits travellers who want one of the shorter marked circuits and can assess mountain conditions. The city tour with Martial Glacier Nature Reserve is an easier logistical option when the reserve is one stop in a wider Ushuaia overview; check how much walking time the selected departure actually allows.
A guided mountain outing makes more sense for ambitious ground, winter conditions or anyone unsure about route choice. Carry layers, water and footwear for wet or snowy ground. Compare suitable outings on our Ushuaia trekking page, but verify the current trail status before setting out.
